Religious Liberty & the Workplace
June 26, 2018
Independence Day is next week. One of the prized liberties secured by our nation’s founding fathers is freedom of religion. The maxim was “separation of church and state.” Initially, it spoke to the church having freedom from the state. In today’s more secular climate, the same maxim has come to speak of the reverse – the state having freedom from the church.
The shift in perception and interpretation over time has left us with a confusing landscape. This is an informative article providing some perspective: The Messy Reality.
Practically speaking, consider the following:
- What are our religious liberties?
- How does this affect believers in the workplace?
- What actions are truly prohibited?
- What reasonable rights can we insist on exercising?
Many believers in the workplace sincerely desire to have legitimate and winsome influence in the middle of a culture that simultaneously resists and seeks spiritual answers. What can guide their efforts?
First Liberty Institute, one of the largest legal firms in the nation dedicated exclusively to protecting religious freedom for all Americans, provides practical guidance on this important topic in this guide: Workplace Rights. I heard their president and CEO, Kelly Shackelford, Esq, speak earlier this year.
*Please note we will not have a call next week due to the observance of Independence Day.
