Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Philippians 4:4
Do you have fun at work? For most people, the answer would be a resounding “No.” But how much would our daily lives be changed if we were able to find true joy in our 9-5 grind? The difference could be truly extraordinary. Dennis Bakke shares his story in his book, Joy at Work: A Revolutionary Approach to Fun on the Job, about how he and his company did just that – brought fun and joy into their normal work days, and turned that fun into great success.
Setting the Standard
“Imagine a company where people love coming to work and are highly productive on a daily basis. In Joy at Work, Dennis W. Bakke tells the true story of this extraordinary company, and how, as its co-founder and longtime CEO, he challenged the business establishment with revolutionary ideas that could remake America’s organizations. It became a worldwide energy giant with 40,000 employees in 31 countries and revenues of $8.6 billion. He rejects workplace drudgery as a noxious remnant of the Industrial Revolution. He believes work should be fun, and at AES he set out to prove it could be. Bakke sought the joy of a workplace where every person, from custodian to CEO, has the power to use his or her God-given talents free of needless corporate bureaucracy. Perhaps Bakke’s most radical stand was his struggle to break the stranglehold of “creating shareholder value” on the corporate mind-set and replace it with more timeless values: integrity, fairness, social responsibility, and a sense of fun.” – Amazon.
The reality is, most people spend more than a third of their day at work. If those 8-10 (or more) hours are a drudgery, how good will that person’s quality of life really be? If we are commanded in the Bible to be filled with joy, why should that exclude our professional lives? This book is an inspiring and refreshing take on how our work life should really be.
Finding Joy at Work
If you’re thinking, “My job could never be fun,” fret not. Here are some simple steps you can take today to find more joy in your work:
- Make a friend. Having a work best friend is a huge morale booster for your day. Studies show that there is a significant link between work relationships and job satisfaction.
- Take breaks. Stepping away from your desk for lunch or a quick stroll will boost your mood and boost your productivity.
- Show up each day with a good attitude. Your intentions for the day have more effect on your mood than you might imagine.
- Enjoy the little things. Drink a great cup of coffee, listen to good music or interesting podcasts, or diffuse some energizing essential oils at your desk. Make your space a peaceful sanctuary of productivity.
The Lord has done it this very day; let us rejoice today and be glad. Psalm 118:24
